Died September 2007, aged 94: Sidney Pitchforth, of Manygates Avenue, Sandal, was well known as a local barber. After the Second World War, he opened his barber’s shop on Busy Corner and later on Manygates Avenue, where he lived with his wife Muriel. In April 2007 the Wakefield Express featured the heart-warming story of Sidney and Muriel’s wedding anniversary celebrations. The couple, who were together for 70 years, spent their wedding day watching a Wakefield Trinity match and returned to the Belle Vue ground to toast their anniversary. Sidney died after a short battle with cancer. His daughter, Wendy Taylor said: “He was a big supporter of Wakefield Hospice. It’s quite apt that his final days were spent there.” He left six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. A funeral service and cremation took place at Wakefield Crematorium.
