Died April 2002, aged 57: Much-loved teacher Bernard Carr died less than a year after he retired, suffering a heart attack while cycling, one of his favourite pastimes. Mr Carr, who lived in Carr Lane, Sandal, was a classics teacher and senior master at St Wilfrid's School, Featherstone. He was secretary of Wakefield Art Club and was a devoted member of Wakefield White Rose race. He left behind his wife, Catherine, twin children Jonathan and Julia, and daughter Louisa.
Headteacher at St Wilfrid's School, David Lewis, told the Wakefield Express: "He was such a lovely fellow, everyone will say that. Virtually his whole career was spent at St Wilfrid's. His death has come as a real blow to everyone at the school." The funeral was at St Peter and St Paul's Church, Sandal. The service was intended to be a celebration of his life and guests were asked wear bright colours. St Wilfrid's School closed that day to allow friends to pay their respects.
