SMITH: Albert Edwin (Ted)
Died 9 October 2000, aged 86: Ted Smith, who lived for many years on Barnsley Road, was born at Stockton-on-Tees on 10 July 1914 and was still only a baby when his father was killed in France 1917. He himself served as a lieutenant in the Royal Artillery during the Second World War but had the misfortune to be captured by the Japanese at the fall of Singapore. He came to Wakefield (Sandal) in 1957 as headteacher at St Austin's School. He was subsequently appointed the first head of the new St Thomas a Becket High School, retiring in 1975. Ted was an active member of Wakefield Golf Club and Durham County CC. He married Judith in 1947; they had two children, Michael and Valerie.
