Died 1 October 2013: William (Bill) Millington, of Marriott Grove, Sandal, was born at Leigh on 6 January 1927 and was raised in Lancashire. He did his National Service in the Royal Navy, serving in the Mediterranean. After his release, he worked in the mining industry, obtaining a National Coal Board scholarship to Nottingham University, where he met and married Joy. He eventually moved to South Yorkshire where he taught at Barnsley College of Technology. He later moved to Sandal, teaching engineering to generations of miners at Whitwood Technical College.
Bill was a member of Woodthorpe Golf Club where he served on the committee for many years, concentrating on the training of junior members. His friend John Haskell, a former club captain, described him as ‘the best conversationalist I have ever known’. Bill and Joy, a pharmacist, had two children, Christopher and Jacqueline.
