GRAINGER, Horace

Died aged 84 on 1 March 1914

FORMER Rugby League star Horace Grainger died in Pinderfields Hospital after a long battle with illness. In 1958, Hunslet paid £2,000 for him, making him the most expensive RL acquisition of that time. He retired as a player in 1964 but went on to become a football referee, also holding other positions in both rugby and football. In the 1980s he was president of Yorkshire County Rugby League. He lived in Sandal with Mabel, his wife of 58 years. The funeral took place at Wakefield Crematorium on March 13 when donations in lieu of flowers were for Wakefield Hospice.
