Died 28 September 2017: Colin Barker. a former probation officer. died after a short stay in Pinderfields Hospital. He is pictured here when he was chairman of the Calder Probus Club of Wakefield in 2013/14.He was born 1931 in Crofton where his family had a small shop in the High Street. He was educated at Hemsworth Grammar School and did two years' National Service with the RAF.He first worked in the Vehicle Taxation Office in St John's and then Wakefield Building Society before spending 30 years years as a probation officer in Wakefield, retiring in 1991. He was also liaison officer at Wakefield Prison Hostel.Colin was involved in many local organisations. He was captain of Sandal Cricket Club for many years, was a lifelong member of Yorkshire County Cricket Club and served as a committee member of West Riding Cricket League. He was also a member of of Wombwell Cricket Lovers' Society.He was a trustee of Sandal Charities Housing, a member of Wakefield Community Health Council, a supporter of St George's Crypt in Leeds, founder member of the Hostel for Working Boys, a member Wakefield Crime Prevention Panel and West Yorkshire Police Community forum. He also lectured at West Yorkshire Police Academy at Bishopgarth.He was an executive committee member of Wakefield Marriage Council and a member of Wakefield City Mission. He was a stalwart of Sandal Methodist Church where he was a steward for many years and where his funeral took place. Colin was the husband of Brenda, father of Paul and David, father-in-law of Cathryn and Grandpa to Charlotte and James.
